ABOUT THE STUDIO
The Vault is the vision of Owner and President Bob McCutcheon. Bob is a Pittsburgh native and long time Pittsburgh community leader. His passion for music and his love of community led to the concept of “The Vault”.
Bob started his first recording studio, “Alternative Studios” in his mother’s garage in 1988 where he worked his way through college engineering and producing local bands. Although his professional path ultimately turned towards successful career in business, he never gave up the passion. He continued to play, write and record music for the next 25 years. Inspired by his children’s love of music, his family embarked on a journey to create a new and vibrant space were musicians of all kinds could connect, co-create, record and promote their music. They purchased the old bank building on Neville Island and hired Los Angeles based Yanchar Design and Consulting Group, a premier design firm specializing in the design of high-end recording and post-production facilities. In 2016, The Vault was born.
Our mission is to promote Pittsburgh to achieve greater recognition for its vibrant arts community and rich history in musical excellence. The Vault hosts a world-class recording studio, record label, recording school and community outreach programs through its charitable work. It also includes “Inside The Vault” that provides content and promotional opportunities to artists and other industry professionals, through our blog, YouTube channel and publications. Our primary objective is providing access to a state-of-the-art facility and a talented team dedicated to building communities and supporting artists.
With the NEVE 8058 as its centerpiece, The Vault is a world-class recording facility designed to provide the highest quality service to some of the most elite artists and producers in the world. With 6-time Grammy award winning Producer/Engineer Jimmy Hoyson as our Chief Engineer, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality service to our clients.
Originating in Allen Sides’ Ocean Way Studios in Los Angeles, this vintage Neve 8058 was one of several Ocean Way consoles with an amazing history and pedigree. Allen is not only the owner of Ocean Way, he is one of the most respected engineers and producers in the business.
Prior to its reconditioning, the desk was owned by legendary Producer/Engineer Scott Litt whose work on six R.E.M. records was followed by a remarkable career working with the likes of Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, and the Indigo Girls, to name a few.
Ask any experienced engineer or producer…” if there were only one desk you could work on what would it be?” The overwhelming response would be… “a Neve”. The most sought after “Class A” Neve consoles are: the 8058 and the 8068. This 8058 has the most hi-fi offering, with an ‘airy’ full-bodied sound (think Fleetwood Mac and most of the classic UK recordings of the 1970s). When you think of Neve Studios – Muscle Shoals, Sound City, and Electric Lady immediately come to mind. There’s something magical about what they do to signals running through them. These are fantastic for acoustic, jazz, classical, ambience and rock. Nothing in the world sounds quiet like them.
Restored by Vintage King Audio in 2017, this desk has been through pain staking detail to completely recondition all of its modules, faders, compressors and the overall aesthetics, while being mindful of its history and originality.
As of May 2018, this amazing desk now finds its new home at The Vault Recording Studios in Pittsburgh, PA where it will now begin the next chapter in its life. Making great music. Making more history.
